Interview with Shannon Wysotski hand crafted cold processed soap

Q: How did you start making natural soap?

Shannon: By day I am a Denturist and by night and on the weekends I am a soap maker! For many years now I have had a keen interest in things handmade. 4 years ago I became frustrated with commercial soap. I am fair and have sensitive skin and I was finding everything left my skin feeling tight, dry and itchy. I began to make soap for my husband and I and quickly became addicted!

Q: What goes into your natural soap?

Shannon: My basic soap recipe is with equal amounts of oils of olive, soybean, coconut and palm. I super fat my soap with a variety of oils and butters including olive oil, cocoa butter, avocado oil, kokum butter, castor oil and shea butter. This means this extra bit of heavenly oil is left unsaponified in the soap. A perfect way to give your skin a moisturizing drink! Olive oil and soybean oil both help create a bar that is a great skin conditioner. Coconut oil is an emollient and it makes the bar hard and the lather fluffy. Palm oil helps create a hard bar.
Rest assured, all of my soap is 100% handmade from scratch. I do not use premade soap bases or melt and pour soap bases, where is the fun in that? The spirit of Etsy is in handmade crafts and I am honoured to share with you my soapy creations!
I use a variety of natural materials to achieve colour in my soap creations. My natural colour materials are things such as clays, alkenet root, annetto seed, seaweed, herbs, botanicals and ground spices. I also use Mineral Pigments which create colours such as blue, pink, green, black, white and purple. I do not use Food grade colorants (FD&C) which are synthetic.

Q: How do you make your soap last?

Shannon: To get the most out of your lushious soap place it in a well drained dish between use. Allow your soap to dry between use for a longer lasting bar. Allow your soap to breath by not storing it in air tight containers or wrappers. Use a natural sponge, wash cloth or loofah with your handmade soap will also extend its life.

Q: What is the standard size?

Shannon: I pH test all soap batches to ensure it is mild.  I hand cut all soap so the actual size and shape may vary slightly. All soaps weigh 4oz-4.5oz. (unless other wise noted)

Q: You recently started making natural lip balm.  Tell us a little bit about what goes into this fantastic product.

Shannon: Unrefined natural cocoa butter, mango butter, shea butter, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil and vitamin e are all in here and all of these oils will pamper and moisturize your pooch. The bees wax I use in my balms comes from a local bee keeper and is pure and unrefined. This balm goes on smooth and is not greasy. I have chosen not to add artificial colour to my lip balm creations. Petroleum Free too.
